Right up front — this is not going to be theologically profound. Or maybe it is. What I know is that when I read this particular passage in the Bible last week, it made me giddy with delight. Sidenote: I started a read- through-the-Bible-in-a-year plan in January and as of today, I am eleven and a half weeks behind. This is real life people. For what it’s worth, I am not giving up. The plan I am following has you read from the OT and the NT and also from either Psalms or Proverbs. It is great. I love it. I recommend it. It’s on the YouVersion Bible app. If you don’t have it, stop reading this and go download it right now. It is free. It is the Bible in your pocket at all times. Complete with devotionals and reading plans of all varieties. I love it. (Oh did I say that already?)
So last week in my reading, I was up on Mount Sinai with God and Moses. God gave Moses the top 10 commandments and a bunch of other details. He told Moses EXACTLY how He wanted His tabernacle made, and when I say exactly, I mean EXACTLY. Sidenote #2: I discovered that God’s favorite colors are blue, purple and scarlet 🙂 Read Exodus 26 through 28 and you’ll see what I mean. Now I want to decorate one of the rooms in my house with this color scheme 🙂 God also tells Moses exactly how He wanted the priests garments to be sewn. Which leads me to my delightful verses. Ready? Here they are (this is God talking):
“And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for glory and for beauty. You shall speak to all the skillful, whom I have filled with a spirit of skill, that they make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him for my priesthood.” — Exodus 28:2-3
The part I put in italics! That’s the part! God fills people with a spirit of skill! He gives people special abilities to accomplish the tasks He wants accomplished! I can’t stop using exclamation points!
See? It’s not that profound. But then again it is. I just wanted to draw your attention to it. God is awesome. He has things He wants done, and He equips people to do them. It makes my heart leap. If I am willing, if you are willing — He will give us jobs to do and then give us the skills we need to do them.
How has God equipped you? Do you have a creative ability to sew? Or paint? Or are you athletic? Maybe you are a mathematician, and numbers are your native language. Are you super organized and a great administrator? Are you a skilled musician? Do you love to sing? Do you love to teach? Maybe you just really love to care for people. Do you like to build things? Do you like to cook? You might be a good talker — or a good listener. But be assured, God has stuff He needs accomplished in this world, and He is filling us, His people, with the skills to see these things done in His name and for His glory. Praise be to God!
